Excerpt:

“Watch out, Sam!” yells Jake.

I fling myself sideways onto the grass, pulling WhipEye out of reach of the lizard’s snapping jaws. The beast keeps going, leaping up.

Tarath springs vertically after it, but the Komodo’s flapping wings lift it fifty feet in one beat, inches beyond the caracal’s swinging claws. Tarath falls back to the ground, landing silently on the grass. She snarls up at the Komodo.

Hissing, the lizard hovers above us. His eyes bore into mine. “If you want to save your elders, bring the staff to Gorgon. Today. Alone. Or they die.” Shifting his gaze to Tarath, he says, “We’ll meet again, Great One.”

Tarath yowls while the Komodo quickly flies away, giving a faint roar before it fades in the distance.

“Mom.” Jake rests his hand on his mother’s shoulder. She appears unconscious.

Scrambling over the lawn to Dad, I press trembling fingers against his neck. He has a pulse. Jagged cuts on his thighs have darkened his jeans with blood. The same ugly slashes mark Cynthia’s legs. The wounds appear serious enough for stitches, but not life-threatening. In fact, when I examine Dad’s cuts closer, they’ve already stopped bleeding. Komodo bites can be deadly due to venom, but I’m not sure about claw wounds.

Jake looks bewildered. “Why didn’t you give the staff to the Komodo, Sam?”

My throat thickens. “I couldn’t.” It sounds lame, even to me. With one decision everything in my life is in shambles. And I have no one to blame but myself.

Tarath surprises me when she shrinks to five feet tall while padding toward us. Lowering her head between our parents, she sniffs the air. “Poison,” she spits.

GUEST POST

by Geoffrey Saign, author of the YA fantasy series, MAGICAL BEASTS

Why writing is so much fun!

The most difficult side of writing for me was always grammar—because I didn’t have a very good grasp of it. Once I did, that became a non-issue, and editing was more about catching mistakes than worrying about making them. Also, in the beginning of my career I sometimes had to do major rewrites on books. As my skills improved, the first drafts were about 90%+ finished—all I had to do in editing was catch grammar, clean up plot fine points, and enrich areas that were not fully explained—and that all became fun.

But even when I struggled with grammar and getting the story right the first time through, what made writing exciting was that I put my passions into the story full throttle. I care about the environment, nature, and wildlife—thus these elements are always present in every book I write. I also have a long history in self-awareness and exploring harmony and intelligence, and all my characters learn and grow. They are aware, and become more aware. Lastly, the style of books I read when younger were fantasy and thrillers, and thus all my books have a lot of action, suspense, mystery, and adventure. They reflect parts of my own life. I have a black belt in kung fu, so I put martial arts in a lot of the books. I’ve traveled and sailed all over, and that sense of adventure also permeates my stories. And all my stories have elements of romance.

These are the kind of stories I like to watch on the TV or big screen, and thus writing them is a blast. It also makes the characters more interesting to me, because they reflect my passions, values, and sense of adventure. Besides fiction, I also write nonfiction; one book about the environment, two on wildlife, and a recent one on stress reduction—again all areas that I have expertise and huge interest in. That kind of symmetry, writing stories or nonfiction that reflect your own passions, values, and sense of living, gives a lot of energy to your writing—it’s never a chore. The last three books I finished, a 4th Jack Steel book, a 4th Magical Beasts book, and the nonfiction SMILE MORE STRESS LESS book, were the most satisfying books I’ve written in a long while. They were all so much fun!!! Every time I read/edited the 4th Magical Beasts book I enjoyed it as if I was reading it for the first time.

Lastly, I write at all hours, follow intuition in everything, stop when I’ve had enough, and follow no one’s rules on how to write, how much to write, or when to write. Thus writing is never a chore, and always a harmonious adventure for me too!
