Little Kid Unicorn Book Feature – It’s Not Easy Being a Unicorn by Beatriz Rare

Lucy the unicorn has trouble making friends with the other animals. She thinks she needs to look like a horse to hang out with the horses, or like a zebra to hang out with the zebras. She disguises herself with paint, costumes, and hats in her attempt to fit in with the different animals. Unfortunately for Lucy, this doesn’t seem to work. Should Lucy just try to be herself?

Kids will laugh at Lucy’s not-so-creative disguises as they learn the value of being themselves.

James N Simpson5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book That Teaches Kids Pretending to Be Something You’re Not to Fit in Isn’t Going to Work Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019Verified Purchase

It’s Not Easy Being a Unicorn follows a unicorn as it tries to make friends by disguising itself and hiding it’s unicorn uniqueness (nose horn) by pretending it is a number of different equus creatures (horses, donkeys, zebras etc), since it has never come across another unicorn, but finding they just look at her funny. Then her friend Brian (a bird) tells her what she should have done all along. It’s a great book for kids who have maybe moved to a new area and think they need to dress differently, or even pretend to be a different race or religion in extreme cases I guess. There’s also an origami page after the story showing the reader how to make their own unicorn horn that straps to your head. Illustrations are fun and cartoon like.

It’s Not Easy Being a Unicorn like other books by this author has been formatted to be read in landscape mode (holding your device horizontally), where it takes up the entire screen. Words and pictures display together on the screen like a traditional picture book open to two pages. A lot of self published Kindle authors can’t be bothered to format their work and it displays like a mess with bits of text on one page and an image on a small part of the screen on another, so I always like to take the time to point out when authors care about their reader’s experience and their own work enough to take the time to format it.

GoodReads Review

Tony Parsons rated it it was amazing

Lucy (unicorn) has trouble making friends with the other animals.
Horse’s hang out with horses, & zebra’s hang out with zebras.
It seems that’s the way it is.
Lucy tried disguising herself, but that didn’t work.
More disguises. The Zebra’s, donkey’s, & ponies still wouldn’t have anything to do with Lucy.

What advice did Ryan (bird) give her?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great hand drawn colored pictures, & proper font & writing style. A very well written children’s (age 2-8) educational adventure story book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational adventure movie, an animated cartoon, a classroom PP presentation, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.
