Interview  With Kyle A. Massa

Q: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I considered myself a writer the first time I held one of my printed books in my hands.

The name of the book is Gerald Barkley Rocks. It’s a comedic supernatural mystery about rock music and cats—in other words, pretty weird. It’s also technically a novella by word count, even though I marketed it as a novel. If I’m being honest, it’s a bit of a flawed book, but I still love it—especially when I held it for the first time.

I recall the moment vividly. I stood at the kitchen counter, tearing open a box from Amazon like a long-awaited birthday gift. Inside was a single slim book with a gorgeous cover (designed by my friend Nathan Rumsey). It was a proof copy, though, so Amazon slapped an ugly band around it reading NOT FOR RESALE.

In my experience, nothing makes you feel like a writer more than reading your own words off a printed page. The texture, the smell, the sound…it was the realization of a lifelong dream.

Q: As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Definitely a cat. We have several similarities.

For starters, introversion. I like being around people, but only up to a point. Much like a cat lurking in a dark room by itself, I need my mornings and evenings alone to write and/or read. If you bother me during those times, I might hiss.

Also, I like my cat naps. I’ve found 17 minutes to be the optimal time, which is a little different than my cats, who nap for roughly 17 hours. Maybe they’re onto something…

Q: Describe your writing style.

To borrow a term from middle-school math, I’m very much a guess-and-check style of writer. Basically, that means I have an idea, write about it a bit, then check and see if it actually works.

For example, for my comic fantasy novel Eggs for the Ageless, I thought it might be fun to try an epistolary style. I envisioned a book where dysfunctional gods and goddesses write letters to each other as the world below them slowly succumbs to chaos.

So, I tried writing it. The story didn’t really work, but I had to see it on the page to be certain. And it wasn’t a complete loss, since some of the characters lived on in subsequent drafts.

This style generates many dead-end projects and half-finished manuscripts, but it’s essential to my creative process. Plus, when my guess turns out to be correct, there’s no better feeling.
