And as long-brewing political tensions simmer beneath the surface, the playful veneer of the competition begins to crack. In the end, Phera, Dominic, and Rocelle find themselves united in a desperate bid to prevent a duel that threatens the integrity of the kingdom, the stability of the continent, and any hope for a happily ever after.

Phera’s voice trailed off as they caught up to where Rocelle happened to be standing, alone, on the other side of the tall hedgerows. Rocelle had bent to examine one of the gorgeous red flowers, deftly plucking one and turning to her left as if to lay it tenderly behind a companion’s ear. But no one was there. There was a look of brief confusion on her face before she chanced to catch Phera looking upon her.
Phera’s hand drifted instinctively to her braid as if to tug it aside and grant passage to a petal’s kiss. The brief and yearning sunbeam of Rocelle’s gaze fell to frost as her face froze with a hard swallow. The blossom fell from her fingers. She turned and strode away with haste.
Phera walked to the wall of blushing red once she was alone. With an idle twitch of her wrist, she summoned a gentle breeze to lift the discarded flower from the other side of the hedge and deposit it into her palms. She grazed the soft petals with her fingers. A helpless breath hitched in her chest and she fought it down mercilessly. She secreted the flower into the folds of her dress and made as swift of an escape from the gardens as she could manage.

From playing the DM in Dungeons and Dragons to writing fantasy novels, Nikhil Prabala loves storytelling, delighting in fantasy fiction from the epic to the cozy and everywhere in between. The Duchess of Kokora is his first published novel.
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, he graduated from Stanford in 2019 and is currently based in the Bay Area. In his free time he enjoys ballroom dancing, singing, playing the guitar, tabletop games, and spending time with friends and family.
