The true story behind the Kiss and Kill murder in Texas in 1961. Author Larry King says: Washed in the Blood is a page-turning read about the time–early 1960s–and place–Odessa, Texas–during its rowdy oil boom days when violence often rode the range. It is at once an examination of local mores and foibles, piety and hypocrisy and an inside-look at the famed ‘Kiss and Kill’ murder of a 17-year-old would-be actress, Betty Jean Williams, whose ghost is said to haunt the Odessa High School campus to this very day.

ABOUT THAT GHOST

GUEST POST BY SHELTON WILLIAMS

Students, faculty, coaches, and visitors at Odessa High School have encountered Betty’s ghost over the decades. I have interviewed them, and I have doubted them to their face(s), but none of them has expressed the slightest doubt.

She haunts the old theater; she haunts the field house; and she haunts the stairwell that she once threw herself down to prove that no one would care if she fell.

She will come to your dreams; she will ask you for help; and she will laugh if you can’t quite reach her to do so.

She will rob you of your knowledge on a test; she will make you late to class; she will delay your monthly period; and most of all she will render your football team harmless in a contest against the mighty Permian Panthers. Such is the power of the Curse of Betty the Ghost of OHS.

Most of all she will understand you, but she will forever torture you about who she really was and what she was doing or trying to do at a stock pond in Winkler County on the night of March 22, 1961.

Don’t believe me? Go to the parking lot across from the theater and honk your horn three times at midnight. Just don’t tell anyone that I said to do so.

Shelton L. Williams (Shelly) is founder and president of the Osgood Center for International Studies in Washington, DC. He holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and he taught for nearly 40 years at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He has served in the US Government on 4 occasions, and he has written books and articles on nuclear proliferation. In 2004 he began a new career of writing books on crime and society. Those books are Washed in the Blood, Summer of 66, and now the three books in the Covey Jencks Mysteries series. All firmly prove that he is still a Texan at heart.

  1. Oh, this makes me want to take a road trip to Odessa just to honk my horn at midnight in the parking lot across from the theater! What a fascinating story! Thank you for sharing!
