Interview With Thomas Reilly

What are you passionate about these days?

Family; exercise (running and tennis); the Yankees (a fan since 1962, although it’s been a tough 2023 season); and cats (we currently have three).

What do you do to unwind and relax?

Reading (history, historical fiction, biographies, suspenseful fiction, biotechnology articles); piano playing; tennis.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

 Motivated and kind.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

When my first book, Chasing Time, was accepted for publication by an independent publishing house (World Castle Publishing).

Do you have a favorite movie?

 Yes- The Fellowship of the Ring from The Lord of the Rings trilogy (book written by one of my favorite authors, Tolkien, and movie directed by one of my favorite directors, Peter Jackson).

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

I may be prejudiced but I  think both of my books (Chasing Time and Trial and Redemption) would make compelling and highly entertaining movies.

What inspired you to write this book?

I have a scientific background with a PhD in microbiology and a career in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research. During my career, I also developed excellent writing skills. It was this combination, coupled with a fertile imagination, that prompted me to write books encompassing realistic medical suspense with a touch of fantasy.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I plan to write more books in the Janus Key series where a magical time-bending key influences modern day characters in unpredictable ways.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Trial and Redemption?

The college student in Trial and Redemption, pre-vet major Julie Remson, is loosely based on my own daughter Katie, now a practicing veterinarian in the U.S. Army. The various pharmaceutical characters in Trial and Redemption are loosely based on various individuals I have known during my own career in the industry.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

The fantasy element in both books, the time-bending Janus key, was a concept percolating in my mind for several years. I always thought it would make an interesting component of a novel, and over the years when I bounced the idea off friends and family, the feedback was positive. The challenge was then developing the concept into a full-blown novel. When I finally decided to challenge myself to write a novel, I used several familiar settings, events, and people to fill out the story. For example, the protagonist in Chasing Time, Tony Lucas, grew up in Brooklyn and like me, was the son of a pediatrician. The Yankees, my favorite team, and New York City, my hometown, play important parts throughout the book.  The main setting of the novel is my current home, Wilmington, Delaware. The  pharmaceutical and biotechnology characters in Trial and Redemption are loosely based on various individuals I have known during my own career in the industry.

Thomas Reilly is a retired biotechnology scientist who holds a doctoral degree in microbiology. He is the author of numerous essays and articles on science and technology. TRIAL AND REDEMPTION is a story of medical suspense coupled with a hint of magical realism. His first book in the Janus Key series, the award-winning CHASING TIME, was reissued in 2023. He lives in Wilmington, Delaware with his wife Linda.
