Another dewdrop hits her nose. But this time, she does not wipe it off as it mingles with the drops from her eyes while she searches inside for the strength to remember that which remains unresolved in her life, with her family, with her destiny. Is he really the one? Should she reveal what should only be revealed to the one man who will bring her to her destiny?

A purse of her lips and she finally says, “Sara, my great-grandmother, she was our link to the wisdom of generations of spiritually inspired women before her.”

Still facing away from Peter, she says, “Sara liked you. She saw something in you when she first met you at that first dinner at her ancestral house when we were staging for our mission to retrieve the object.”

Turning back to him, she says, “Sara said to my grandmother Roza, her daughter, that you harbor the same light her husband, a Sufi imam, my great-grandfather, had within him when they first met.”

She points to his eyes. Blue ones which naturally go with his once-blond and now-sandy-brown hair. “Sara said the light is blue. The light we should seek is blue. The world thinks the light is white. But the one we seek, we yearn for, we die for, is blue. She so feared dying before she could find the blue light. For in the blue light, we shall return”, she said.

Peter, who knows so much trivia because he is an editor of all sorts of topics, papers, and books, is speechless until he finally mutters, “Blue? Where did that come from? I’m not getting the connection to the mystery of the ancient matriarch we solved.”

“As you had with your grandfather, your pappy, who entrusted you with an ancient family oral tradition, passed from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation, as far back in time as that temple, the world’s oldest temple, which our follies led to be destroyed, so there is a line of similar wisdom passed down in my family line. But through the women. Mother to daughter and to granddaughter.”

What kind of world ruler would you be?

The Mystery of the Matriarch series features characters who represent a range of leadership models. Now, who would you want to be?

One could aspire to be Father Jean-Paul Sobiros. An ethics guided leader who finds solutions sort of within the spirit his church guidance. Chapter 26 best exemplifies his leadership, which wins the heart of his dear Sister Magali. His rationale for becoming a priest also shows the depth of his ethics. As a French officer assigned to chase war criminals in Bosnia, in anger he shoots the officer orchestrating mass systematized rapes of Bosnian Muslim women. The shooting weighed heavily on him which led to his decision to become a Jesuit priest. Although the Kurdish protagonist, Zara, mistrusted him in The Matriarch Matrix as she mistrusted everyone, his ethics gained her trust in The Matriarch Messiah. Gaining the trust of others for valid and sustainable reasons is one of the highest forms of leadership.

The exact opposite leader would be the dark puppet master, Alexander Murometz, who exemplifies the persuasion, the manipulation, the Machiavellian command that leading corporate and political leaders might manifest. Is it ethical? Is it moral? They are not Jean-Pauls, but goal driven people who will hit target by nearly most any means they can deploy, within law and regulations. Murometz, on the other hand, cares not for the latter two guardrails as the search for the black object superseded all human created constraints. Instead of gaining followers respect, as Jean-Paul showed, they gain followers because of immense power.

To be seen is the kind of leader our Mystery of the Messiah’s protagonist Zara will become. At the end The Matriarch Messiah, we see hints of how she will rule which will play out in the next book, The Matriarch Mandate. What we do see are glimpses of her leadership in her backstory dialogue with her BFF and loyal lieutenant, Peri. The two fought the Daesh side by side as part of the Syrian Kurds fighting against occupation. Leadership in Rojava, the northern Syrian Kurd autonomous region, is co-led by a man and a woman, one of the few cultures to have gender equality in leadership. Zara’s battle leadership came from her audacity, her instincts, and her resulting successes. Her all-female soldier unit followed her as they knew they all would win.

So, what kind of world ruler would I be? I would use elements of each successful leadership type deployed situationally. Stay tuned for The Matriarch Mandate as the follies of leadership plague our cast of characters.
